The minimum marriage contract would be for two years and could be renewed if the couple stays happy. The contracts would include provisions on how children and property would be handled if the couple splits. "The proposal is, when the two-year period is up, if the relationship is not stable or harmonious, the contract simply ends.
This is what their reasons are for trying to legalize this so called temporary marriage:
"You wouldn't have to go through the tortuous process of divorce,"
"This reform is absurd. It contradicts the nature of marriage," said Hugo Valdemar, spokesman for the Mexican archdiocese. "It's another one of these electoral theatrics the assembly tends to do that are irresponsible and immoral."
I just don't know what is happening in our society. Sometimes it scares me to the marrow whenever i think about our kids and what they will face in the future. God please help us..
What do you have to say about this crazy invention?
wow! i have not heard of this at all. i find it totally crazy that it is Mexico doing it - a country knee deep in Christianity - Catholicism in particular - I cannot believe it!!
ReplyDeleteOH MY! Is what i have to say!!
stopping by from VB today!
Have a great one!
Hi, visiting from MBS!
ReplyDeleteI think this proposal is ridiculous! Isn't that kind of what engagements are for? I guess if you're opposed to "living in sin" this offers an easy solution, but in the long run, the easy way isn't the best way.
Isn't that what dating is supposed to be? That is taking any seriousness out of marriage at all which is really sad. This allows people to marry whoever, whenever and then just walk away.
ReplyDeleteamazing! I hadn't heard about this - - and to think that would pass in a place as religiosly-based as Central America! hmmm.... makes you wonder WHO is pushing for that typle of legislation. I don't think it's the people that are excited to get married / newlyweds that are looking for temporary marriages. :(
ReplyDeletestopping by from vb - have a great week!

Mrs. No-No Knows
This measure is so incredibly stupid. If you get married then it's because you presume you will stay with that person forever. This doesn't mean you should stay in an unhappy marriage though. Therefore, make divorce easier! What kind of trust will couples have when this kind of measure encourages a "he will be a great first husband" mentality?
ReplyDeleteIf you're entering a 2 year contract then you better add a prenup. Why not make prenups mandatory unless the couple expressly decides not to have one? (keep in mind couples now have to ask for it not against it)
Two year marriages are idiotic.
Wow! So much for "til death do us part" and happily ever after. I think it's too easy of an out. Marriage is something that needs to be worked on, constantly. No one has a happy marriage without work, even if they are deeply, deeply in love. Don't agree with the law!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely ridiculous. Why even get married in the first? Wouldn't it be easier to just shack up(which I'm not for either)? This is exactly why our generation as well as future generations will never learn to commit...in ANYTHING they do. It's truly up to us to set good examples and raise our children in the way that they should go....
ReplyDeleteWow what a crazy idea. Not all that surprising though.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea about this! that is crazy. It's odd how our world has changed so much in the last many years. I can picture two people sitting at the alter, "do you take this woman to be your wife for the next 2 years?" haha...something just doesn't sound right.
ReplyDeletecoming to you from VB

it reminds me of the old practice of handfasting. It lasted a year and a day, at which time you got married or went your separate ways.
ReplyDeletePeople are so afraid of commitment these days, so afraid of being unhappy. They don't realize that the commitment is to invest your heart in the relationship, to learn & grow together, and to create stability for the family & society. People are falling for quick happiness fixes instead of realizing that happiness comes as a result of loving others and living a valuable life.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't so shocked when I saw this in the news. The world is turning upside down and I don't know what will become of us in years to come. This is simply outrageous.
ReplyDeleteOMG! This world is ending. I love everything about your blog, very unique and i hope to learn more from you.
ReplyDeleteI find this to be kind of ridiculous. If you don't think your marriage will survive then why get married at all?
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower!
Amazing indeed May. I am not married but for sure I would not want to be in a temporary one!:) I have many friends who have been married for well over 20 years. Of course some marriages end in divorce but one should not go in it contemplating a temporary marriage.
ReplyDeleteOMG this is the strangest thing, I personally don't agrre with this it just makes the life long word marraige meaningless :(
ReplyDeleteGlad to read what everyone is thinking about this crazy invention. At least I'm glad that people are on same track with me.
ReplyDeleteI think they are just trying to drum up more tax revenue. If 50% of all marriages end in divorce, I have a feeling the numbers would be substantially higher for a 'temporary marriage'. It is planning to fail.
ReplyDeleteWow this is ridiculous..I can't believe this. I just became a new follower. Would love a follow back.

This is sad and pitiful. It's as though the are supporting the breakdown of families.
ReplyDeletethe devil is determined to mess up the institution of marriage and this is one of it.
